Any tips?

It's baaaaack.....the yeast infection, that is.

Poor Zoey has been plagued with horrid diaper rashes since her third day home from the hospital, many of which are of the yeast variety in recent months. I feel for her, especially since it seems that you can change her diaper once in the afternoon, notice what might be just the start of a rash, and then--BOOM--two hours later, it's a full blown yeast attack.

This one is another nasty one, reaching essentially from stem to stern on her poor bottom. She's walking slightly bowlegged and pointing to her nether regions, saying "Owie Mommy....doctor?". (Am I surprised? No. Back in the fall, she was in the doctor's office once a week for a month, while we were fighting a particularly stubborn yeast infection that refused to go away.)

So, here's what I'm thinking. We are, of course, piling on the prescription cream at the moment...but I think it might also be time to start some potty training. Zoey has been showing interest in potty habits for months now (apparently this is a positive sign), but I've been noticing even more interest in the past few weeks. For instance, while we were in Reno, she routinely asked to go potty every night after her bath, would make a valiant effort (no results, though), and then ask to have her diaper put on. She is also starting to ask to have her diaper changed. (Another positive sign, according to her pediatrician.)

My question, for all you potty-training veterans out there, is how to go about this task? Heather, Kelly, Alisa, Sally, etc, I want to hear from you! (And of course, anyone else who would like to comment, potty-training experience or not.) We have a collection of Elmo and Disney Princess panties ready and waiting. (Sadly, these seem to be more popularly worn on her head.) Should we go cold turkey? Haul her to the potty seat every hour? What works?

I'm curious.

Send her to "Potty Training Boot Camp." That's my suggestion. Well...really there isn't one, but there SHOULD be!!!! I'm waiting with Jensen because he's a boy and dosn't quite "get it", plus new baby and all coming along. Faith had a really early interest. A few things that worked with her (all at different times)

-Set the timer for 20 minutes when she heard it beep, it was time to go sit on the potty.

-lots of books to look at by the potty (just like Daddy...although he prefers Cabelas)

-panties only during the day. I know it's kind of gross the first few days, but the pull-ups are just a bit too cozy and diaper like. Not to mention WAY to cute. Why would you learn to use the potty if you could wear "princess" diapers?!?

-Stickers...although didn't work that well.

Good luck.

BTW-Faith suffered TERRIBLY from Yeast infections too. Uggghhh!!! I swear we'd just get it cleared up and it was back again. On top of that she had some other "bowel" issues. Not to sound like an odd-ball or anything, but if she drank Soy Milk, she did much better. Also helped with her eczema. At 3 we started her back on cow's milk (and she was potty trained then, too).

Okay...enough of my potty training manual!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Ok, I have zero experience in the potty training arena, but have you thought about giving her a kid probiotic for the yeast infections? They have children's formulas. Just something you might want to ask your pediatrician, although you might have already done this. Also, it might help to cut back on whatever sugar you are giving her as sugar usually aggravates yeast problems.
Maybe this will help? Good luck!

Well I am by no means an expert but after trying Pull-Ups with little success we went cold turkey last year at this exact time so Olivia was a few months shy of turning three. Although I am sure we could have done the process sooner, I just couldnt handle it on my own with nursing baby so we waited until Rob had the time off to help. We told Olivia she was a big girl and it was time to wear underwear and then we made sure to sit her on the potty every hour. She had a few accidents but quickly figured out what the problem was. We of course didnt leave the house much for a few weeks and she has done great since then. Olivia had major constipation issues which made knowing when she had to poo much easier so this helped us to never have to clean up that mess thankfully. Good luck!

Actually, I saw an episode of The Doctors on tv, and they interviewed a woman who had a Potty Training Boot Camp! There were lots of candy rewards....

I'm with Tara....no experience potty training, but think that probiotics might be helpful in the meantime.

Looking forward to reading all about this endeavor!!!

Hi, Amy; Poor little Zoey! Potty training is probably a great start to the yeast infection problem. Have you tried a systemic anti-fungal? Not sure if children can take Diflucan, but it has worked wonders for adults with yeast problems; not just vaginal, but for underarms for men or in the groin region in athletes, etc. for stubborn cases. Have you asked your pediatrician about this? Often only one dose will do the trick! Also, plain yogurt with fruit and a little sweetener (the flavored yogurts are so loaded with sugar) may help balance her system...Some people have even applied plain yogurt topically for yeast. A couple suggestions; sounds like you're willing to try anything at this point to make her more comfortable! Also wanted to thank you for your kind words on my blog; they are SO appreciated by Ron and I both. I look every day to see if there are new comments, and the feedback is very inspiring as you know from your own blog. Take care, and Happy New Year! I havent seen you on Facebook; find me if you are, would you? Rebecca Hobbs-Kasco
